This intel is about the first fulltime job I got

By Chuck Madere

Chuck Madere Here: August 2009

When I was a young man it became apparent that I needed to go to work if I wanted anything special like pants, shirts, food, and milk.

My dad passed away when I was very young and my mother had four other children to raise. Times were tough back then. Mom lived on Social Security checks and work for the school to put us through school.

I was fifteen years old but had the looks of an older guy so I decided to go out and look for a job. Turned down at every place I went to. As I was walking home there stood Hexcel Honeycomb right in front of me. It was late afternoon and I was tired but I went in the front door and asked for an application. The gal handed it to me and I filled it out.

Never filled out one of these before and had little information about my history but I handed it in anyway.
As I was walking out the door the gal at the front desk said, would you like to talk to anyone about the job? I looked at her for a long time before answering. I replied, sure.

I was interviewed by a guy in a white shirt and tie for about ten minutes and then he asked when I could start. Shocked I said right now. I worked the swing shift that day and was told to report back the next day at midnight.

I had a fulltime job and school to attend each day. Talk about burning your candle from both ends.

I had never worked or been awake from midnight till morning in my life so this was going to be a challenge for me. That first night it was all I could do to stay awake, if fact someone woke me one time during that first night. So glad it was not the boss.

We manufactured insulation for mobile homes and travel trailers. It consisted of two sheet of brown paper with brown paper honeycombs in the middle.

I was the glue up guy. Another guy would shear off 1 1/2" slices of paper stacked about 5" high and I would glue them end to end so there would be a never ending supply of honeycombs to fill the drying oven located in front of me. Hot all night.

And to think they would give me $0.75 an hour to do this all night.

Contributor's Note

I am not saying that 15 year olds should go out and find a job. No, I saying stay in school and enjoy your childhood even if you think you are all grown up.
